| The French program at the International school
is based on the educational philosophy under which learning a language
is intimately linked to the long process of getting acquainted to
the culture of the said language. Thus, The International School has created an
immersed cultural environment where children not only grow in a French-speaking
world but are repetitively put in language situations where they
will progressively and implicitly feel the need to express themselves
in the target language. This is what we call the immersion method.
It is a method which explores language learning through culture.
In the following paragraphs we will introduce you to the different
activities of our French program.
Oral Expression: The International School believes that
oral expression gives children a sense
of satisfaction and achievement. It is a routine, for example,
to start every Monday morning with a summary of activities done
during the weekend. In so doing our students get a chance to share
their feelings in French and at the same time improve
their listening skills.
Reading Comprehension: It is
the main focus of the French program in the upper grades: Children are
presented with a text from their French books. Under the direction
of the teacher students perform group and individual reading activities. They
will learn new words and will be tested about their comprehension
of the text.
Grade 6: “Les contes d’argent”
Book 6 “Edition Guerin” with the activity book and complimentary reading material.
Cultural Activity: Our cultural activities
range from games based on a French-speaking culture to ethnic cooking,
movie/video watching and play acting.
Grammar: As students start to
feel more comfortable with the language they are slowly and progressively
introduced to simple and easy grammatical concepts.
