The French program at the International school
is based on the educational philosophy under which learning a language
is intimately linked to getting acquainted to
the culture of the said language. Therefore, The International School has created
an immersed cultural environment where children not only grow in
a French-speaking world but are repetitively put in language
situations where they will progressively and implicitly feel the
need to express themselves in the target language. This is what
we call the immersion method. It is a method, which explores
language learning through culture. In the following paragraphs we
will introduce you to the different activities of our French program.
Oral Expression: The International School believe that
it is important for students to try to speak what little they know
in the language. This Oral Expression gives children a sense
of satisfaction and achievement. It is a routine for example
to start every Monday morning with a summary of activities done
during the weekend. In so doing students get a chance to share
their feelings in French and at the same time improve
their listening skills.
Reading Comprehension: Children are
presented with a text from their French books. Under the direction
of the teacher students participate in group and individual reading activties. They
will learn new words and will be tested on their comprehension
of the text.
Cultural Activity: Our cultural activity
ranges from games based on a French-speaking culture to ethnic cooking,
movie and video watching, learning songs and participating in stage performances.
Grammar: As the students start to
feel more comfortable with the language we slowly and progressively
introduce grammatical concepts (basic nouns, verbs, adjectives, masculine/feminine, present tense).
