The first grade Language Arts curriculum incorporates:

• Reading to understand the relationship between letters and sound through classroom discussions, reading a variety of literature genres, using large and small reading groups.
  
• Vocabulary developed through rhyming and decoding strategies, analysis of word patterns, and sight words.
  
• Spelling to connect to writing. Phonemic awareness of initial and ending sounds, and short and long vowels.
  
• Grammar to understand the structure of sentences: nouns, verbs, adjectives, and pronouns.
  
• Writer's Workshop
